| A few words about Dachshunds from Cynthia Christman who owns a Dachshund name Cedar (You can see Cedar's puppy picture above): |
| Dachshunds have a reputation for being "dumb" but there's a difference between "dumb" and trainability. Dachshunds are not into pleasing anyone but themselves, unlike border collies, golden retrievers and labs that live to make you happy. YOU have to be smart enough to give THEM a good reason to do what you're asking. They also have a tendency to want to run YOUR life which unfortunately can lead to a lot of problems. I have a library of books on dog behavior and I highly recommend to dog owners the program "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan carried on the National Geographic Channel. He also has a book on the market and I believe a video as well. His ideas and methods can help every dog owner have a better relationship with their pet.
Dachshunds have been in the top 10 breeds in this country for years and years. Since owning one, I've come to realize how different they are from any other breed I've been around. And I know I'm not alone. Whenever I'm doing an art show or I have Cedar with me in public, so many people come up and talk about the dachshund they grew up with or the ones they have. They have such endearing traits that really make them distinct. And of course they are just so darned cute with their hot dog bodies and short little legs...great for jokes and puns too! They love to bury their head in your armpit and always want to be covered up. They detest rain with a passion (which can create house training problems if you are not careful) On one hand they are very tough and want to do things their way...on the other hand they are such softies and need to be taken care of with a soft lap and a blanket when it's time to sleep. To me what is really appealing is that contrast of behaviors. They are not subjects worshipping their god but rather companions that chose to share their life with the one they love. Very cat-like actually...you have to earn their affection. Our Cedar is a quiet dog, only barking when someone comes to the door, after which she says hi and then goes and does her own thing. She has a life of her own which I really admire. She has no doggy odor and doesn't shed more than an eyelash sized hair now and then. Cedar is a bit unusual in that she is very low energy for a dachshund and is quite the couch potato. Most have a lot of go-go-go in them, but Cedar comes from a line of lazy dogs and loves to sleep-sleep-sleep. We knew that from meeting the breeder and her dogs...it's characteristic of her bloodlines...and it works great for us. At the end of the workday and after supper, we like to put our feet up and be couch potatoes ourselves, so our little Cedar just fits right in. |
