Pekingese Portrait Reference Photo

This is Brutus.

Brutus was a much adored rescue Pekingese that lived all his life with two German Shorthair Pointers…and ruled the roost. Brutus survived a back injury involving several discs and some major surgery. With devoted care, he lived a long and happy life following that incident and this portrait was done as a memorial.

The true value of an artist vs. photography and/or computer-generated art really surfaces in cases like these. Although much beloved, there existed only two photographs of this dog with no option to get any more since he had passed. The two photos my client did have were no larger than 1 ½ inches! They were in two tiny little frames. I was able to enlarge the photos so I could at least see the dog. Then I consulted with my client with reference material showing other purebred Pekingese. She was able to give me some direction as to color and other characteristics by looking at these photos.

The final portrait is one of my favorites… probably because it was such a challenge working with such tiny reference material.
